Salem's nickname "Witch City" was earned because of the city's role as the location of the famous Salem witch trials of 1692. It hardly tells the whole story of this vibrant waterfront community that dates back to 1626.

SALEM

The pedestrian friendly city that attracts over a million visitors each year, nearly half those in the month of October, is also well known for its many outstanding examples of Federalist period residences and buildings, many designed by noted Salem architect, Samuel McIntire.  In fact, Chestnut Street, a haven for wealthy mariners and their families, has so many examples immortalized in postcards, paintings and films, that it was acclaimed the "most beautiful street in America".

The Peabody-Essex Museum is another Salem jewel.  Established in 1799, the world-renowned organization has the distinction of being the oldest continuously operating and collecting museum in the Untied States.  PEM also holds one of the world's largest and most comprehensive collection of cross cultural art from Asia. 

In addition to a growing restaurant and shopping scene, the city has easy public transportation access to many surrounding North Shore communities and Boston via bus, MBTA commuter train and direct ferry service to Boston.

Did you know... 

Salem is the birthplace of the National Guard, established in December 13th, 1636 when the Massachusetts General Court in Salem required all able-bodied men between the ages 16 and 60 to join the militia.
